A question about PCOS, losing weight and stupid doctors.

Recently I've realised my PCOS hasn't really been treated appropriately by my doctor. I was barely given any information when I was diagnosed (I found out most of what I know through research online and talking to friends) and hasn't been checked since.

I was prescribed birth control initially; I was told I'd only be on it for 12 months in order to regulate my periods because they were concerned about my weight at the time but when that time was up they just kept prescribing it - it wasn't until I noticed it had been nearly 18 months that they stopped it... and prescribed me another BC pill. I don't even remember having a health check before the new pill.

Anyway, I stopped taking all medication completely over 6 months ago and I'm doing pretty good on my own. But my goal now is to lose this weight. At my heaviest, I was over 300 pounds (22 stone or 136 kg) and in the last 6 months I've lost a reasonable amount. But it is rather hard going and without the antidepressants etc that I feel were at least partly responsible for the gain in the first place, I could use some help. I've noticed an increase in facial hair and my periods are just as irregular as before I was diagnosed. I menstruate about every 2-4 months and they are quite heavy and frequently painful. I also seem to have developed problems with my blood sugar levels as I have suffered several times recently with symptoms that appear to be related to hypoglycemia.

I don't particularly want to take BC again. I've heard a couple of people talk about metformin and glucophage etc. and I'd like to investigate these. I would also like to try "alternative" BC such as an IUD but I'm worried I'll be turned down by the doctor and I'm only recently starting to get over severe social anxiety and lack the confidence to stand up for myself right now. And before anyone suggests going to another doctor - there is only one surgery in my town and you're not allowed to register with one in a different district as far as I know. There are at least 6 doctors at this surgery and I can see any one of them but I'd guess they would all club together.

I have an appointment with my GP this afternoon and I need to be prepared so if anyone has any advice on what questions I should be asking and how I approach these subjects that would be great. I'm 25 and in the UK if that helps. Thanks.
