well... it is kind of benign. It doesn't do anything except (perhaps) cause cervical cancer... and there's a good, reliable test for cervical cancer, should someone be infected with a cancer causing strain... ... and if most forms of HPV *don't* cause cervical cancer, then why freak people out?
