I'm having a go at getting pregnant and I'll probably ovulate tomorrow based on test strips. My husband and I had sex last night and this morning and i just realized that I'd really like one or two last beers before jumping into this. Would thy have any I'll effects? I'm thinking no since it take a few day after fertilization to implant. Horrible pre-mother of the year award right here :) (just kidding). Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks.

A few drinks is the reason I have two kids and one on the way. All joking aside, a little beer shouldn't do any harm.

I agree-I'm pretty sure that right around the time I got pregnant with my older daughter we'd had at least one really good bottle of wine...

Haha, yeah. There's a reason so many people have birthdays 9 months after major holidays and their parents' anniversaries. XD

The evidence surrounding FAS is shaky and contradictory. You'll probably be fine, especially if the alcohol will have left your system by the time the zygote implants!

Hey, maybe the evidence isn't as contradictory as I thought. A nice rundown. (http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/FetalAlcoholSyndrome.html)

What an interesting read! I don't plan to ever get pregnant, but it's still useful info in terms of mythbusting.

VERY interesting article! Thanks for the link. In some European countries women were traditionally encouraged to drink beer during pregnancy and while breastfeeding--it was believed to be very healthy.

It's very low risk during breastfeeding, and is often encouraged even in the U.S. although some people don't know that it is okay. There is speculation that certain ingredients in beer actually boost supply. The amount that goes through to breastmilk is negligible (i.e. like less than really ripe fruit) and your biggest risk is dropping baby (or rolling on it--you do need to take serious precautions if you co-sleep, even if you've only had one or two).

It's okay to have a beer or two every now and then WHILE YOU'RE PREGNANT, so I'm sure it's okay to have a couple drinks while you're trying. My sister said the saying goes "Drink until you see pink", meaning until a pregnancy test confirms it, go for it!

Best of luck with the process!

Both times I got pregnant I was drinking during the month I conceived. Both my kids are fine and perfectly healthy. :)

It's certainly okay before conceiving! Also, while American medical professionals will definitely tell you to have absolutely zero alcohol while pregnant because they do not know how much it would take to harm a fetus, European women often drink lightly during pregnancy and that is considered totally okay.

It's been awhile, but I remember the professor of my embryology class saying that there is a several week window at the beginning of pregnancy where teratogens (any substance that can harm the development of the fetus) are not as dangerous. This is important because many women don't realize they're pregnant until several weeks in, so there's a bit of buffer room. It takes almost a week to get from fertilization to implantation, so I doubt a few drinks at this point will hurt anything.
