Why is it that IUD's are only recommended for women who have already given birth? Does it mess with fertility? I'm 17, can I get an IUD?

I'm on Yasmin, and it's working great and all, but I'd love the idea of being hormone and hassle free.

Same here! I have major problems with PMS depression when on ANY form of the pill (and the patch) -- I'm talking about going crazy, putting myself in the hospital, danger to myself, sort of depression. I asked about an IUD and my doctor said they don't like to use them unless the woman has already had a kid. Arggghhh.

She put me on Yasmin and I'm just dreading PMS week. She said Yasmin helps with PMS depression and we'll see...

I think that someone else on here is 17 and getting an IUD, I forgot her username though. I think the main reason for that is because most 17 year olds are not in monogamous relationships and since your uterus hasn't accomodated a fetus before then your risk of expulsion is higher.

There's a higher rate of expulsion in women who haven't had children. There are also some links between PID from untreated STDs and IUD use, which can lead to infertility.

IUDs are more commonly used in women who haven't had children in other parts of the world.

There are tons of girls who have IUDs and are young, and have not had children. but the major reason they were approved for an IUD is because they've been on so many different types of birth control, and they get horrible reactions to them. They've all been on at least 5 different brands of the pill and tried all sorts of other things. If you just want an IUD and you're 17, they will probably not give it to you. I still think there's probably a risk having on at 17 because it's so young, but that's just my opinion.

You can still get one, but it might be hard to find a doctor who will do it.

The reasons:

your uterus may not be big enough yet, and if your uterus is too small, teh IUD will expell more easily. Also, women who haven't given birth yet are more likely to expell, just because they haven't had anything in their uteruses yet. :) Expuslion isn't always a big deal - if you get a Mirena IUD and have it inserted by a doctor trained in Mirena insertion, Mirena will replace the IUD for free if you expell it.

if you're younger, doctors have worries about you not being monogamous or having risky sex and contracting an STI. If you get an STI while you have an IUD and fail to treat it, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which if also left untreated can result in infertility. The IUD itself shouldn't cause fertility problems, but PID can.

I am trying my third type of birth control next month, and my doctor said that if this one doesn't suit me well, he'll give me an IUD. When I asked him why doctor's don't like to give you one until you've already had a child, he said he's never heard that theory.

So yeah, and my doctor is a great one too.

It all depends on the doctor; but it might be harder because you are very young; I was 20 when I got mine (I haven't had kids btw) and even then I had a hard time convincing. She even tried to get me to use a diaphragm. I was like "Have you heard the horror stories?" cause it seemed like every time I heard about someone using a diaphragm that person got pregnant.

I had to convince her I was monogamous; went a long way that my emergency contact was my boyfriend and that hadn't changed in three years.

But nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'm totally happy on mine; do some research and if it is what you really want and you think it's right for you, i think you should try to convince your doc.
