Something I came across today on Healthbords was the idea that vibrators can desensitize you to other forms of stimulation, I can see how it can be true because often I find nothing happens if I have been using a vibrator too often, my vulva and my hand goes numb and using my hands afterwards doesn't work, but then Healthboards isn't always the best source of information.
So how true is this and do these effects last very long?

i'm curious--was this just a comment that someone posted or some sort of article? i've heard that idea before too, but i've also heard it refuted...neither by "absolutely reputable" sources, though.

Workers in industry can lose sensation in their hands if they use vibrating machinery. I expect women have many different responses to using a vibrator, but I don't think they cause any harm.

Well, the temporary numbness does come from the vibration, but it also happens with anything else vibrate-y, like industrial machinery, and should go away after you've put down the vibe for a bit. If the numbness bugs you, maybe a less powerful vibrator would help, or having a looser grip on/not pressing as hard with your current one? I wouldn't worry too much about it being permanent, since industrial workers who develop problems are using the equipment 8 hours/day, but... less numbness is always good.

As for the "I can only orgasm with a vibrator" thing, using a strong vibrator a whole lot CAN make you used to one very specific, very intense sensation. It's like if a guy were to masturbate using the exact same Kung Fu Death Grip from age 13 to age 18 - other forms of sensation might not feel as good, because they're not that intense/don't feel exactly the same as what he's used to. But orgasms can be a tricky thing for women, and some can only orgasm with a vibrator in the first place.

You can get *temporarily" desensitized, as with any vibration - like for a few minutes. I've heard a few times that if you seriously use vibrators a LOT, the temporary effects can last a couple of days, but not anything long-term.

I guess, as with anything, you can get used to one particular type of stimulation, and prefer it for a quick release or for a specific kind of stimulation. I love my vibrator, and I use it regularly - but I also enjoy regular sex and have orgasms with that too. I think it's just a matter of personal flexibility as to what kind of stimulation you prefer or how often you want it. Like, if I orgasm regularly for a while, it's different than if I have no stimulation for a few days - neither is better, but the sensations are different and do different things. Does that make sense?

I've been using vibes for almost 25 years, and haven't been desensitized. I try to vary my activities some, and not use only vibes, but I've been through long periods of time using mostly vibes, and I can still come like the dickens with fingers or tongue.

Maybe it's true for some folks, but not for me.
