Well this is something that has been happening so long I forgot about it until recently when I bought a really cute pair of lacey panties. All the crotches of my panties turn wierd colors. Like the black lace ones I bought turned purple and dark pink turns orange. Im not talking about discharge or anything. The actual fabric fades. I asked my mom what she thought it was and she said she had no idea but said that her secretions have actually burned someone before. Maybe it's a wierd high acidic thing? Anyone else have either of these things happen? any ideas? Im not sexually active at the moment so I don't think its related but any feedback would be cool.

I've had that happen, but only to a couple pair. I always thought it was just acidic.

it's probably a reaction between your body fluids (sweat, vaginal fluids, etc) and your detergent. or does the discoloration happen *before* you wash them? try rinsing your undies in cool water or cool water with vinegar or cool water with salt prior to washing them. or just hand wash them with a mild soap/shampoo and hang them to dry.

how long do they sit in the hamper? it could still be a reaction between detergent and your body fluids, especially if you follow container directions for detergent (way more than is actually necessary), use a water-efficient washer, or use fabric softener. a lot of gunk ends up building up in your clothing when you follow directions... the companies LIKE this because then you have to keep using their products. if you use a small amount of detergent, double rinse, add a 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle, and skip the fabric softener, you might stop having the problem.

it *is* possible that some dyes would react to your fluids, too. i find that certain gel deodorants cause this reaction with some dyes. and i find that my own sweat has discolored items if they weren't washed right away. i rarely wear undies (when i do, they're cotton men's undies), so i haven't noticed a problem with those.

that happens to me a lot too. It's annoying, a have a few pairs of black cotton undies with what looks like bleach stains on the croche, but I don't ever use bleach. I have no clue what causes it.

It appears that panty crotches bleach out because of the PH of your vaginal secretions. This is also why seemingly black cloth turns completely "un-black" colors. See black dye is pretty expensive and hard to make so the great majority of the cloth that is dyed black is actually dyed really, really dark blue or brown. When it's been dyed dark, dark brown to get black, then it will fade or bleach out to light brown or orange.

The specific PH of your vaginal discharge would also determine the color to which the crotch of your panties would fade. An acidic discharge will often cause black fabric to fade to dark red; whereas an alkaline discharge will result in dark purple, shading down to brown.

This website (http://www.publicbookshelf.com/public_html/The_Household_Cyclopedia_of_General_Information/blackdye_cbd.html) should explain more.

Well your vagina is supposed to be acidic... but many vaginas also have (really good for you) peroxide producing bacteria as well. So your secretions may be acidic, and have peroxide, in them and it makes sense that sometimes they change the color of your underwear. Mind you, it's good for you that your vagina is so highly charged... just bad for the pretty panties.

You think that's bad?

I've actually developed holes in my underwear in those "bleached" spots.

I've heard of acidic vaginas actually eating through the crotches of panties (over the course of a couple months, so that it's a short enough time that it's clearly not just normal wear and tear....), so I don't see why your secretions couldn't interact with dyes as well.

I've had dark green turn yellow. I think it has to do with a combination of dye quality and vulva secretions (as well as residual urine) chemical combination.
