My periods didn't seem to last as long when I went from pad to tampons, either. I really don't have a definite answer, but I'm guessing it's the same amount of fluid, but because the tampon absorbs it quickly and internally, you don't deal with the flow for as long because it doesn't have to flow out of the vagina before it gets absorbed. I'm just speculating, though.
